Pinthalaiya and its importance | Grade 2 Lesson

Pinthalaiya

Pinthalaiya

It was the day of the Sil programme. So all the children in the grade three class observed Sil. A venerable Thero preached a valuable Dhamma story. Let’s listen to that story.

One day god came to see our Lord Buddha who was at Jethawana Temple.

God asked, “Lord Buddha, what are the meritorious deeds we can gain more merits?”

The Lord Buddha said, “Indeed, there are many meritorious deeds. Like helping others, almsgiving, preparing gardens, plantation programmes, mending fences, building bridges as well as keeping pinthaliya to drink water.”

Piyomi asked a question. “I have a beautiful garden with flowers and fruits. I’m looking after my garden. I kept a Pinthaliya with fresh water for anyone who came to my garden. Animals such as birds, and squirrels drink fresh water from my pinthaliya. Is it a meritorious deed?”

“It is a good question child. Gardening and keeping a pinthaliya are very good deeds we can do in our daily life,” said Thero.

“Let’s keep a pinthaliya for birds” all students determined.
